Resources for GATE Coordinators

Numerous resources are available today that provide information and advice about gifted education and gifted kids; it can be daunting to select only one or two. We have listed those resources which we have personally found to be useful in living and working with gifted individuals.

For a more focused list, choose a subcategory below.

Education is one of the biggest concerns parents have when it comes to their children, frequently to a higher degree for parents of gifted children. In general, a school that recognizes your child's high potential, and rewards intellectual effort and risk taking can prepare children well for future endeavors and successes. Just as all gifted children are not the same, there is no "best" school/program for the gifted. When considering a school or program for your child, consider your child's social, emotional, and physical development as well as intellectual development.

Consider your child's unique traits and your family's lifestyle preferences when evaluating schools. Some children will thrive in an atmosphere of high achieving competitive students; whereas, others will thrive in schools that are more self paced, or less "grade" oriented. For many families, education is experienced as a series of opportunities that change as the child grows and changes.

The most important thing to keep in mind while contemplating your child's educational needs is balance between their intellectual, social, physical, and emotional well being. Children should be able to have a positive attitude regarding effort, challenges, and learning. In addition to different types of schools and programs, there are also various methods for adapting standard state curriculum to better meet your gifted child's educational needs.
